Arthur E. Appleton
Arthur E. Appleton, J.D., Ph.D. is a Founding Partner of Appleton Luff – International Lawyers a boutique international law firm with offices in Barcelona, Brussels, Geneva, Kampala, Singapore, Warsaw and Washington, D.C. Prior to forming Appleton Luff, he was Counsel with White & Case, and Of Counsel with Lalive & Partners. Dr. Appleton also serves as a Senior International Trade and Investment Consultant for the World Bank, and a Consultant for the U.S. Commercial Law Development Program.
Dr. Appleton has almost 30 years of experience in international trade law working with international businesses, sovereign States, and international and regional organizations. His work has taken him to approximately 60 countries, throughout the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and Latin America. He has also appeared as lead counsel before the WTO Appellate Body.
Dr. Appleton is an Adjunct Professor at Johns Hopkins University (SAIS – Europe) where he teaches international trade law. He also teaches graduate courses in trade law at the University of Barcelona (IELPO), the World Trade Institute (Bern) on whose Board he serves, and Executive Education courses at the Graduate Institute (Geneva). He has published three books and approximately 45 articles on trade and arbitration, and serves on the Editorial Advisory Board of Legal Issues of Economic Integration, and the Advisory Committee of The Latin American Journal of International Trade Law. He is on the List of Experts (Chairpersons) for disputes involving Trade and Sustainable Development for the EU-Colombia-Peru Trade Agreement (Council Decision of 6 May 2014 (2014/277/EU)), and the List of Experts (Non-national Chairpersons) for the Association Agreement between the EU and Central America (Council Decision of 23 June 2014 (2014/394/EU)). He served as Co-President of the Association of International Business Lawyers (Geneva) from 2003-2009.
Dr. Appleton Speaks English and French and is a Swiss and U.S. citizen. He is admitted to practice in Washington, D.C. and Maryland (USA), and is a member of the Geneva Bar Association (Ordre des Avocats de Genève).
