6-10 March, Treviso, Italy: INTRODUCTION TO BIOSAFETY AND RISK ASSESSMENT FOR THE ENVIRONMENTAL RELEASE OF GENETICALLY MODIFIED ORGANISMS (GMOs): THEORETICAL APPROACH AND SCIENTIFIC BACKGROUND. Biotechnology and Brazil is the first major international conference to focus on Brazils recently approved seed legislation and the effect it will have on the prospects in Brazil itself and around the world. 1-5 April, Algiers, Algeria: TENTH AFRICAN OIL AND GAS, TRADE AND FINANCE CONFERENCE AND EXHIBITION. Put on by the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), this conference focuses on the interface of finance with hydrocarbons and also provides a forum for debating topical issues in the industry. Some issues to be discussed include volatile oil prices and their effects, partnerships for energy development, the environmental and social effects of development in the oil and gas industry, the legal and regulatory reforms needed to attract the necessary investment, as well as new oil and gas frontiers. 9-12 April, Chicago, US: BIOTECHNOLOGY INDUSTRY ORGANIZATION ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION. This forthcoming industry convention will include an international programme with a ministerial seminar and a global biotechnology forum, as well as a business forum and breakout sessions. On 8 April, which has been labeled the "International Day of Opposition to Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs)," a BioEthics counter-convention will also convene, organized by organizations opposing to GMOs.

10-14 April, Paris, France: CODEX COMMITTEE ON GENERAL PRINCIPLES (23rd SESSION). The committee deals with rules, principles, and procedures referred to by the Codex Alimentarius Commission, particularly those which define the purpose and scope of Codex work and the nature of Codex standards. The committee will also address the economic impact of standards.
