Delivering on Sustainable Development in the
Environmental Goods and Services Negotiations
An ICTSD informal Roundtable

Organised by ICTSD

Venue: Salle C-1, World Meteorological Organisation
Geneva, Switzerland, 12-13 October 2006

Description

The aim of the Roundtable, which is organised as part of ICTSD project on "Bridging Trade and Sustainable Development in Environmental Goods and Services", was to review concrete options to move the environmental goods and services (EGS) negotiations forward towards a sustainable development outcome supportive of environmental, developmental and trade objectives. To this end, the meeting provided an open forum outside the constraints of the formal negotiating setting for Geneva-and capital-based policy makers and leading experts to address key knowledge gaps in the EGS debate. Discussions focused on issues such as non-tariff measures that affect environmental goods exports and the feasibility of categorising the various environmental goods proposed in the negotiations into "single", "dual" or "predominantly" environmental end-use. In services, the meeting reviewed, among other things, issues related to domestic regulation in environmental services.
