UPDATED Doha Round Briefing on Trade and Environment Negotiations (August 2003)

A resume of negotiations on the WTO's Doha mandate on Trade and Environment, released just prior to the Cancun Ministerial. This paper looks at progress in the special sessions of the Committee on Trade and Environment (CTE) in the areas of the relationship between the WTO and multilateral environmental agreements (MEAs), observer status for MEA secretariats, and environmental goods & services. It also addresses the 'non-negotiating' mandate on environmental measures and market access, the Trade-related Intellectual Property Rights Agreement and the Convention on Biodiversity, ecolabelling, and capacity building, among others.

A Southern Agenda on Trade and Environment

A project undertaken with the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) and the Regional International Networking Group (RING) to (Phase I) gather and present Southern perspectives on the trade and environment link, building on consultations with developing country trade policy representatives in Geneva, and (Phase II) to strengthen the capacity of trade negotiators, key national policymakers, and regional actors in developing countries to determine priorities for promoting and negotiating proactive positions which reflect their own 'Southern Agenda' on environment and trade in the multilateral trading system.
