Private Greed versus Public Need? Ethical Issues in Globalisation

11h00-12h30

The challenge to build a sustainable world requires a set of principles and values, which reflect common but differentiated responsibilities to guarantee the continuation of life on earth as well as the wellbeing of human societies. Thus, the negotiations and commitments acquired in WSSD should include basic accords on the ethical foundations of sustainable development. The proposed dialogue aims at promoting a constructive discussion about ethical principles, proposals for concrete codes of conduct and specific practices of all actors and major groups involved in the economic, social and environmental aspects of sustainable development.

At this event the multiple interlinkages between ethics and globalisation are going to be explored. The purpose of the event as well as the Futures Dialogue is to assess, through a Socratic debate, the role of ethics in sustainable development. The dialogue will provide a forum for a critical take at the WSSD text that has been placed in front of negotiators and assess the real potential for effectively addressing the issues identified.
