DG Trade organised a roundtable debate on the ongoing Environmental Goods Agreement (EGA) negotiations. The objective was to engage policy makers, European industry, NGOs, and other stakeholders in a discussion about how trade can positively contribute to environmental protection and climate action. The event focused on how to best shape the EGA negotiations to facilitate trade in environmental goods and services internationally.
Mr Arias Cañete, Commissioner for Climate Action and Energy, and Mr Karl Falkenberg, Director General of DG Environment, elaborated on the role of innovative environmentally-friendly technologies in the EU environment and climate policy. Following this, two thematic sessions discussed how to increase deployment of environmentally-friendly technologies as well as opportunities and challenges of green trade liberalisation at multilateral, plurilateral and bilateral levels, and in particular the ongoing negotiations of the EGA. Mr Matthias Fekl, French Minister for Foreign Trade, closed the session with a reflection about the 2015 Paris Climate Conference (COP21) and how the EGA could contribute to climate mitigation objectives.
ICTSD was represented by Dr. Veena Jha who spoke about the climate-dimension of the EGA. In addition, Mr. Peter Brun, Managing Director of the ICTSD-initiated SETI Alliance, spoke about clean energy under the EGA.
