There is not much time before we face a new paradigm of trade regulations
A breakthrough between the US and India effectively resurrected the WTO Bali package of trade agreements in November allowing the post-Bali work programme and work on all Bali decisions to resume. Nevertheless, with the proliferation of plurilateral, regional and mega-regional negotiations, the prospects for the Doha Round and the WTO remain uncertain. As the world’s largest trading economy, China has an important stake in a well-functioning multilateral trading system. In this context, what role can China play in completing the Doha Round and reinvigorating the WTO?
China has launched a new and broad round of opening-up and economic reforms: new FTA negotiations, BIT negotiations, active engagement in plurilateral and secotral initiatives, new Silk Road, and new South-South cooperation. What does China want from these FTAs? What’s the prospect of these BIT negotiations and what challenges for multinational companies in China? What’s the stake and difficulty in plurilateral and sectoral initiatives? How will China keep closely cooperation with other developing countries?
Against this backdrop, the thirteenth Annual Conference on WTO and China in Beijing will provide a platform for experts from China and other major economies and Chinese officials to share their insights and seek solutions.

This conference highlighted several issues that are at the forefront of the role that services are playing in the 21st century world economy. In various panel discussions, experts presented findings from selected chapters in a forthcoming Research Handbook on Services Trade to be published by Edward Elgar.
The conference was a joint undertaking by the ICTSD and the World Trade Institute (University of Bern). The event was held at the World Trade Organization in Geneva under the joint sponsorship of the Missions of Colombia and Mexico, the current and former Chairs of the Committee on Trade in Services in Special Session.
