The amount of investment needed to meet the global challenges of the future is tremendous. Foreign direct investment (FDI) can make an important contribution in this regard. However, the effectiveness of FDI flows depends not only on their sheer quantity, but also on their capacity to drive sustainable development. This paper develops an indicative list of FDI sustainability characteristics allowing stakeholders to evaluate FDI flows according to sustainability criteria.

Implemented jointly by ICTSD and the World Economic Forum, the E15Initiative was established to convene world-class experts and institutions to generate strategic analysis and recommendations for government, business, and civil society geared towards strengthening the global trade and investment system for sustainable development.
